October Surprise: America's Hostages in Iran and the Election of Ronald Reagan/Audio Cassettes
Published in Audio Cassette by Publishing Mills (August, 1992)
Average review score:

A story every American should knowI haven't heard the audio book for "October Surprise," but I did read the hardbound book when it was first published. Perhaps the negative review from "M.P.T." of AudioFile can be explained by the book author's inability to reference virtually every sentence with footnoted sources as he did in the full, paper version. Failing that excuse, the blurb and referenced to a fault, and he used no information from his investigation that he did not have at least two or three unrelated sources for. Though Sick doesn't draw the conclusion in the book, he leaves enough clues for the reader to figure oseems typical of the disinformation reviews written by the small army of media-spinners who enjoy two paychecks--one from their unsuspecting publisher or TV/radio station, and one from a certain U.S. Government agency who wants to discourage the public from knowing about self-serving black bag operations. The fact is that Gary Sick's story is meticulously detailed ut that it was not Ronald Reagan, but likely another still-living former president who was behind the treasonous actions recorded here--someone who still has powerful friends to help quash the truth any time it tries to raise its head. Read or listen to this book, and then buy "Plausible Denial" written by Mark Lane to see what other high-profile shenanigans this same group has been up to. It will also explain just how much control these folks exert over the media to steer the public away from the truth. I very highly recommend both books.
Intelligent, Unbiased, GrippingGary Sick, a former US Navy intelligence analyst who served on the National Security Council under Presidents Ford, Carter and Reagan, has written an incisive account of the double-dealing American-Iranian-Israeli weapons/petroleum co-dependency that has undermined democracy in the US and abroad for many decades. The right-wing and corporate media have responded to these allegations with the usual mix of denial, doubletalk and attempted character assassinations of those who dare to investigate and promulgate the facts. This conspiracy, whitewashed by a Senate investigation in 1992, highlights the necessity for American and global democracy to achieve a reasonable degree of regional self-reliance (eg: renewable energy, genuine arms control) rather than remaining addicted to multinational corporate welfare, Machiavellian pretenses of "free trade" and money-manipulated, superficial democracy.

On Strike for Respect: The Clerical and Technical Workers' Strike at Yale University, 1984-85
Published in Paperback by Univ of Illinois Pr (Pro Ref) (February, 1995)
Average review score:

a wonderful bookGilpin et al. aptly depict and identify what has made Yale's workers and the movement they have created so vibrant and strong. This book is all the more pertinent given last month's strike of all four unions.
A COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHERI had to read this book for a US Labor History course at the University of Colorado. It was absolutely incredible. The authors trace the events leading up to the strike but, more importantly, they describe how the community of New Haven came together in order to defeat "Corporate Yale." I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in labor history and the struggles faced by American workers.

One Damn Blunder from Beginning to End: The Red River Campaign of 1864 (American Crisis Series)
Published in Paperback by Scholarly Resources (20 December, 2002)
Average review score:

A work of superb scholarshipOne Damn Blunder From Beginning To End: The Red River Campaign Of 1864 by Gary Dillard Joiner (Louisiana State University - Shreveport) is an intense and focused study of the largest Union armed forces collaborative operation in the Civil War which took place in the spring of 1864 west of the Mississippi river against entrenched Confederate forces and involved between the 40,000 Union Army troops and 60 Union Naval vessels. The purpose of the engagement was to capture the capital city of Shreveport as part of the campaign to wrest Louisiana and Texas from Confederate control. Relating all of the critical aspects of the campaign including the rather spectacular errors made within it by the Union, One Damn Blunder From Beginning To End showcases a single campaign of the war that tore America in two. One Damn Blunder From Beginning To End is a work of superb scholarship and an important contribution to personal and academic Civil War Studies with its informative and informative treatment of an often overlooked but significant campaign.
A lot of knowledge in a short historyWant to learn a lot in a short period of time about one of the most under-publicized campaigns of the Civil War? Read "One Damn Blunder From Beginning to End - The Red River Campaign of 1864", by Gary D. Joiner. In this volume, Joiner combines his knowledge of the Civil War and his home of Louisiana, his talents as a cartographer, and his experience as an educator to create a very readable history of this event. Whether you are a long term Civil War buff, or just beginning your odyssey into this period of American history, or somewhere in between, you
will gain an understanding of what happened, why it happened, and, in some ways most important, why the history books devote so little print to this Union disaster.

Operative Obstetrics
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Professional (26 March, 2002)
Average review score:

Operative Obstetrics TreasureThis book is simply fantastic. For the practicing obstetrician, it encompasses almost all the issues dealing with the specialty, concerning operative techniques. For the student, there is a lot of new approaches to subjects that other books do not show. For example, there's an entire chapter on symphysiotomy, another on external cephalic version, both subjects very rarely seen in such depth in common textbooks. There's also a very good chapter on surgical basics, dealing with needles, sutures and knots. In short, i recommend this book for those who truly love Obstetrics' practice.
Dr. Hankins is a very intelligent man.I have had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Hankins in person and want to express my sincere thoughts. Dr. Hankins is a gifted surgeon and very intelligent man.He has compassion, as well as talent.I recommend his professional expertise. Cheryle Anderson

Organized Crime
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall (18 November, 1996)
Average review score:

Good BookI had Dr. Lyman in a class and I think he wrote a good book. He is detailed and provided me with alot of information. If you are into organized crime, not just mafia, get this book - it is a good resource.
Good IntroductionThis book is a good introduction to a difficult topic. The authors don't focus on just the traditional "Costra Nostra" topics that many authors fall prey too. The authors carefully blend National and International Organized Crime (OC)Groups, Theories of OC and methods for controling the spread and growth of the groups.
The book is written in a textbook fashion and the authors provide keywords at the end of each chapter to assit the student in learning the main points of each chapter.
Both the authors appear very knowledgable in this subject and they continue to add current information into their newer additions.

Oriental Adventures: The Rulebook for Ad & D Game Adventures in the Mystical World of the Orient (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons)
Published in Hardcover by TSR Hobbies (January, 1992)
Average review score:

One of Gygax's last rulebooksHere it is, the most coveted AD&D hardcover in existence - not only for its rarity, but for the excellence of its rules! Here, you get 128 pages of how to play ninjas, samurai, wu-jen, and more; the elaborate Honor system, oriental magic, and the unique monsters and treasures of Kara-Tur, all in one beautiful reference! The golden age of the 1st edition game, here in one volume.
The Best Forgotten Realms book ever. This book is fantastic, and adds so much depth to the campaign. It has everything you need to run an Oriental Adventure, or make characters in an oriental setting. TSR has yet to duplicate in any other book the remarkebly well balanced rules of this book. For example, the Ninja in Oriental Adventures is more inetersting, better devolped, and more enjoyable to paly with only a few pages of coverage than anything in the 2nd edition complete book of Ninjas. IF you can find it, buy it, you will not regret it. The only drawbacks are that A) the book is out of print, and B) AD&D is moving to 3rd edition, and Oriental Adventures exists solely as a 1st edition book, so the rule converstaion may or may not proove difficult.

Published in Paperback by Thomas Nelson (March, 1997)
Average review score:

The Real ThingThis guy is the real thing , I personally know Duane and he is everything that has been said about him. this book (and Duane, of course) is a gift from God to all of us to help us to strengthen our faith. A tape is included with the book that has the actual recording of the miracle in progress, I still cry everytime I hear it, for I truly beleive that I'm listening to God work. If you are looking for somthing to bolster your faith this is it. I pray that this recording and book will have the same effect on other readers, that it has on me.
I was inspired and blessed by the spirit of this book. This book was a great blessing to my soul, God works in such get awesomeness. The story of Duane's life blessed me and warmed my heart. God is still in the miracle business, if we are open to hear and see the miracles he performs. Thanks Duane for allowing God to work in your life.

Papa's Angels: A Christmas Story
Published in Hardcover by New World Library (September, 1996)
Average review score:

A Sweet Family Story to make Christmas Brighter!Told through the journal of 12 yr. old Becca, the book is written in mountain jargon, warm, friendly, the kind that makes the reader want to drop in and sit a spell with them. After the loss of their MOm to consumption (probably TB), the children continue on living, attempting to make Papa laugh. This is what they feel their mother wants them to do. However, Papa is not in the mood for laughing, in fact, suicide is more on his mind. His fiddle has been silent, his social contacts nonexistent. The Christmas part is touching, when the children attempt to have a Christmas and papa rages that it will not happen. I was happy to see this made into a movie for TV as well, but of course, it is more touching to read the book.
Great and not just a Christmas story. It's hard to believe "Papa's Angels" wasn't written by Becca, the 13 year old girl who narrates the story. Becca, who can't speak, writes to tell the story of her 1930's Smoky Mountain family. With journal-like entries in "Becca's Book," she "says things with writin' that most of us can't say when we talk." She teaches us things that were never our own, without feeling we are being taught, and then they become ours. We learn that some people see nothing but their own misery and we learn about losing someone dear to us but being blessed with another.
Gary Carden, authoring 70% of the story, skillfully weaves countless sayings and anecdotes into short narratives of interesting, entertaining and sometimes tear-evoking accounts of a family's struggle. He writes with such a smooth, natural mountain dialogue, the reader isn't offended.
"Papa can't tell Santa Claus what to do." "His voice sounded like it had tears in it." and "Raise your head and open your heart." are memorable phrases made by Becca's brothers and sisters about their recently widowered father.
"Papa's Angels" might be fiction, but it isn't make believe. You'll laugh in places and if you don't pause somewhere in this book because of the tears, you just ain't folk yet.
A definite for children and adults.

The Papacy and the People of God
Published in Paperback by Orbis Books (February, 1998)
Average review score:

Discovering a new paradigm for papal leadership!Along with the prominent theologians who have contributed articles to this book, Editor Gary MacEoin has done a great favor to catholics and non-catholics alike who look for a new paradigm for the papacy in the next millenium. The contributors open the reader's mind to entirely new--and workable--approaches to papal ministry that are faithful to the call of the gospel and the tradition of the church. A must-read for anyone who is struggling to understand the future of the church and the place of the papacy in that future. When the next consistory of cardinals meets in Rome to elect another pope, papal candidates should all be required to read this before accepting the job!
Excellent collection of must-read papers.I first read most of this book when it was serialized in National Catholic Reporter in Fall 1997. Gary MacEoin has done a splendid job in getting esteemed theologians and scholars like Joan Chittester, Alain Woodrow, Bernard Haring, Giancarlo Zizola, et al., to speak on the crisis of leadership within the Catholic Church. The contributors not only describe various problematic aspects of the Vatican, they suggest quite feasible solutions for turning things around. Every Catholic (and other interested students/scholars of religion) would do well to read this book. --Timothy Conway, Ph.D., author of *Women of Power and Grace: Nine Astonishing, Inspiring Luminaries of Our Time.*
